PROGRAM presents Rodney LaTourelle's
'In the absence of unambiguous criteria'

by Annette Becker

BERLIN, 11 January 2007 - PROGRAM, the initiative for art + architectural collaborations, opened its sophomore exhibition, Rodney LaTourelle's 'In the absence of unambiguous criteria.' Mr. LaTourelle is a Canadian artist, architect and writer who lives in Berlin. His site-specific installation explores relationships between color, space and the body.

On opening night, there was a large crowd of people inside the gallery, but it did not look like anything was going on. All you could see through the gallery windows was a large construction with lots of corners and angles made from aluminum and chipboard. My first thought was, 'this is art?' It looked really boring like a stall in the market.

Then I found the entrance and this colorful world inside. LaTourelle built a labyrinth with a series of rooms lit by neon lights inside phone booth sized boxes that cast different shades of light into the rooms. One was pink and white, another green and white, and a third was silver and white. As a fashion designer, I couldn’t help but notice that one of the light boxes was exactly the color of my coat!

As you walked through each room, you found yourself stepping unexpectedly through one of the stripes into another room. LaTourelle used optical illusions to hide doorways within the stripes.

Apparently the colors were related to colors associated with the body's chakra system. Come to think of it, while I’d been sick with the flu and was tired from working hard all day, after visiting PROGRAM and walking LaTourelle’s labyrinth, I felt much better when I got home. I wonder if that had anything to do with it?
